I often bounce ideas for my novels off of my wife. She’s an avid reader of many fiction genres. One of the first things she said when she read the initial draft of Extreme Medical Services was “Dean needs a paranormal love interest.” I groaned because I’m not that comfortable with the romance side of things in creative writing.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a pretty romantic guy. I’ve been married for 25 years, and I count myself as a successful husband if I do say so myself. So I knew that she was ultimately right. If I wanted Dean to be real, if I wanted Dean to grow as a character that you, the readers, cared about, I had to create a romantic paranormal love interest for him in the story.
For those of you who are on the early access reader’s list, you might have figured out who that person is based on the events I went back and wove into the storyline. If you like it, don’t worry. There’ll be more to come and develop here in books two and three in the series.
The next big question is, what kind of Unusual is she. She has to be a member of the Unusual community. That’s just fiction 101. So my next task is to create a believable character that has some deep ties to the Unusual community. Stay tuned to upcoming blog posts and, of course, future books in the series to learn more.
In the meantime, what do you think of the early chapters of the book “Extreme Medical Services?” You can read the first third of the book (seven full chapters plus the prologue) by signing up for my author’s newsletter here. It’s free, and you can choose between the Kindle Mobi format or the epub format that everyone else uses.
Check it out and share you thoughts on the story so far by leaving a comment below. I always look forward to hearing back from you.
